So, what's the go? You have until the 4th of November to plan, film, edit and submit a film running for no more than 5 minutes - see category details as some have a shorter time limit. Prizes will be awarded to each year level for both the Middle and Senior Campus with a grand prize winner for best in festival. Categories and their requirements are outlined below, but it is important to note that all entries need to be school appropriate, any deemed to be in breach of this will be disqualified - if you are not sure if your film will be in breach of this, please run your idea past one of the media teachers or use the contact form below.
Shortcuts Categories 2017:
ANIMATION - 5 MINUTES MAXIMUM
Animation entries must be at least 90 percent animation. All forms of animation are eligible for submission under this category. For instance, claymation, hand-drawn, cell, and digital 2D & 3D. While a majority of productions entered into this category will be around the 3-minute mark, all must be under 5 minutes.
DIGITAL ART - 2 MINUTES MAXIMUM
Digital Art pieces are works that do not tend to follow a traditional film categories. These films tend to explore an issue or concept in an abstract way. Examples can be found in our examples section. While a majority of productions entered into this category will be around the 1 1/2-minute mark, all must be under 2 minutes.
MUSIC VIDEOS - 5 MINUTES MAXIMUM
Music videos should display a creative synergy between the designated music track / piece and the supportive video footage accompanying the track. The submission must be accompanied by written authorisation from the copyright holder of the recording of the music. Should copyright authorisation not be provided with the submission, the production will automatically be ineligible for judging. While a majority of productions entered into this category will be around the 4-minute mark, all must be under 5 minutes.
FOREIGN LANGUAGE FILM - 5 MINUTES MAXIMUM
Students undertaking a language at Norwood Morialta High School can chose to create a foreign language film. Your film can cover any of the above categories but must be 100% spoken in a language other than English and must include hard-coded subtitles as part of your film. While a majority of productions entered into this category will be around the 3-minute mark, all must be under 5 minutes.
LIVE ACTION - 5 MINUTES MAXIMUM
Live Action productions cover films that deal with fictional subject matter (drama, comedy, action, horror etc). ‘Mockumentaries’ and experimental productions are suitable for submission under this category. Most films created will fall under this category. While a majority of productions entered into this category will be around the 4-minute mark, all must be under 5 minutes.
DOCUMENTARY - 5 MINUTES MAXIMUM
Documentary entries must be non-fictional – fictional documentaries or ‘Mockumentaries’ should be submitted to the Live Action category. Examples can be found under the more information tabs above. While a majority of productions entered into this category will be around the 4-minute mark, all must be under 5 minutes.
SILENT FILMS - APPROXIMATELY 3 MINUTES
Silent films must contain one of the 10 pre recorded musical themes upon which to base the film. Films that do not have a musical theme from the approved list dubbed to your film will be disqualified. Films may be submitted in black and white, or color. Films may be live action or animation. Films must use at least three title cards-an intro card, at least one in the middle, and one at the end of the film. Film running time should equal the soundtrack run time, approximately 3 minutes. Films must be family-friendly/appropriate for viewers of all ages.
FLIP / INSTRUCTIONAL VIDEO - NO TIME RESTRICTIONS
Some staff and students at Norwood Morialta High School are undertaking the transition to The Flipped or Blended Classroom, whereby instructional content is delivered as part of a homework task, rather than during crucial lesson time. Staff and students have been encourage to submit their instructional video as part of our festival to show off these new skills that are being implemented in their classrooms. There is no time limit for this category, however longer videos may be edited for timing purposes.
