MEDIA @ NMHS
In 2015 the decision was made to rewrite Norwood Morialta High Schools media program from the ground up, allowing staff to develop a Year 9 to 12 curriculum that incorporates all new software and technology that the school has invested in as well as include new skills and teaching strategies that have only been recently developed. The SHORTCUTS Film Festival was born of this redevelopment.
Filling the void left by the school musical moving to a biennial event, the festival gives students who would have normally been a part of the school musical to experience a different form of acting and further develop skills that would not be tested during musical performances. It also gives students who may not have been as confident in live performance a vehicle to show their talents.
Too often students in media classes create their works knowing that only a handful of people would have the opportunity to see the work they had put hours of time in to planning and creating. The Arts faculty at the school saw an opportunity to get the students work out of the classroom and into an online space for public viewing, allowing students to experience the ultimate goal of the redeveloped program, an authentic learning experience like none other.
The SHORTCUTS Film Festival has been developed to allow students completing media based subjects to enter their practical work, and, is also open to all students at the school. Guest speakers and professionals have been organised to come in and talk to interested students about future pathways and career opportunities. The criteria for the festival has also been developed to allow highly successful students to enter other state, national and international film festivals.
