So now that you know the theory, it's time to work out how we put that in to practice. Outlined below are a a list of apps that will help you to create your film on your phone, a series of 'skill testers' to practice using them and a section devoted to developing your idea - the hardest part of filmmaking! Outlined below are a series of apps, both free and paid. You don't have to use any of these apps if you don't want to - please make sure that you do your research to ensure that what you are purchasing meets your requirements. We recommend using at least the free apps - it should lead to a better result in the end. Some of these apps are iPhone or Android only, we have tried to find a range of apps for each platform. Filming & Effects Apps
Instagram Hyperlapse
Free - Android / iPhone Instagram Hyperlapse is a fantastic app for speeding up everyday life, but what you might not know is that it has an amazing built in stabiliser that can make any shot look like it was filmed with a steadicam. |
FX Guru / Action Movie FX
Free - Android / iPhone Either of these two apps allows you to add special effects straight from your phone. Best bet is to have a play around with the app before you begin your planning so you know what it is capable of! |
Filmic Pro
$14.99 - Android / iPhone For those of you who are planning on taking this a little more seriously, this app is for you - it is not required though. This app allows you to take full control of your Android/iPhone - think manual on a DSLR. |
SloPro
$3.99 - Android / iPhone SloPro allows you to capture video footage at up to 100fps, helping you to create amazing super-slow motion shots for your film. Free version contains a watermark so we suggest getting the paid version. |
MoviePro
$7.99 - iPhone MoviePro allows you to capture high quality footage (even higher if you have an iPhone 6), edit and export your movie files. An alternative option for those looking for something a little different. |
Kinomatic
$5.99 - iPhone Kinomatic is a hybrid between MoviePro and Filmic Pro - it allows you to take manual control of your iPhone whilst also allowing you to edit your footage. Not as good as each individual app however. |
Editing Apps
Splice Video Editor
Free - iPhone Splice video editor allows you to edit the videos you have captured right there on your iPhone - if you are planning on doing something quick and easy on the fly, this might be the app for you! |
Apple iMovie
$7.99 / $22.99 - iPhone / Apple Mac For those who prefer using an Apple product, you can edit your films on a Mac. Some Macs will already come with the software install, others will need to purchase. Also available for iPhone. |
Windows Movie Maker
Free - Windows Desktop Windows Movie Maker is a simple video editor for Windows computers. Older Windows computers will come with the software installed, if not you can download it by clicking the link above. |
Skill Development Ideas
Time to test those apps out! Below are a series of challenges/tutorials that will allow you to develop you film making skills. You can pick and choose the ones you would like to do, try to link them with the film you are going to make - e.g. If you are making an action film, try to put an action spin on the commercial you are creating. Remember that practice makes perfect, the more you practice using your camera to capture footage, the better your overall product will become.
Shot Type DocumentaryCreate a documentary based on the different types of shots you have learnt. Film examples of each of the shot types and explain when and why they are used.
This give you a chance to practice capturing the different shot types and seeing what they look like. It also gives you the chance to hear your voice on camera! |
